The main tourist destination in Myanmar i Bagan, capital of the first Myanmar Empire. It’s one of the richest archaeological sites in South-east Asia. Situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyawaddy River. The Magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1000 years. Bagan is full of ancient architecture and ruins. Temples, pagodas, monuments, stone sctipts and wall paintings can be found in many places in Bagan. The main four places to visit are Shwezigon, Ananda, Dhammayangyi and Thabbyinnyu Pagodas.
The best season to visit Bagan is during the dry season from November to February, 20-25°C.
Rent a mountain bike
Take a detour and get lost
The distance between the pagodas is easiely reached with the bike. Ride on growel roads, small hills and take a detour for some extra fun. Stop at a pagoda, park your bike, take off your shoes, try to get igonore the vendors, have a look, take some photos, get out, try to ignore the vendors again, put on your shoes and get on your bike. REPEAT.
In contrast to Siem Riep in Cambodia you can end up all alone at some pagodas. Choose one of the less famous pagodas and you might be lucky.

How to get to Bagan?
I took the night bus from Yangon to Bagan. It was a big bus without the possibility to lay down, it’s normal seats. To get to the bus station I took a cab for about 1.5 hours and paid 9300 Kyat. It seems strange that the bus station is so far away from Yangon. Have a look at the link for the best way to get to Bagan – Getting to Bagan
